Check AI image upscaling: useful detail and fidelity

An upscaled image can appear sharper while changing letters, textures or features. Topaz Photo and Let’s Enhance document enhancement tools; your review should distinguish visual comfort from fidelity to the original elements.

Key points

The method to apply

Preserve the original, define the final medium and compare processing strengths. Inspect critical details at 100% and then at actual display size. Reconstructed information does not become evidence of what existed in the scene.

Prepare, test and decide

  1. 1. Define the deliverable

Specify pixel dimensions for the web or physical dimensions and required resolution for printing. A DPI tag alone does not guarantee enough pixels. Identify text, numbers, outlines or authentic features that must not change and list them before processing.

  2. 2. Preserve the starting file

Keep an intact original, authorised provenance and relevant capture information. Process a copy. Record software, model and settings, plus local or remote processing when that distinction matters for the data.

  3. 3. Compare moderate treatments

Produce a light and stronger variant without changing every setting at once. A portrait mode may reconstruct detail that a document or product photograph must preserve. Choose the mode for the content and inspect the actual export.

  4. 4. Inspect critical areas

At 100%, examine small characters, repeated patterns, hair, high-contrast edges and reflections. Look for changed numbers, halos and false textures. Compare against the original side by side; an attractive detail absent from the source should be treated as reconstruction.

  5. 5. Check the actual output

Open the exported file in its intended workflow at final display or print size. Check dimensions, file size, colour and compression. For printing, prepare a full-scale proof before a large run; for the web, check readability and loading.

  6. 6. Accept according to use

An illustration may tolerate reconstructions that documents, catalogue objects or evidence cannot. Record rejected areas and return to weaker settings or the original when necessary. Disclose significant transformations when they could mislead the reader.

Put the method to work

Practical case

Fictional image: a small ‘Batch 128’ label, a fine grid and a plain surface. Produce two upscales at different strengths.

Evidence to keep

Expected: ‘128’ does not become ‘123’, the grid preserves its structure and the surface gains no pattern presented as authentic.

Make the decision

Reject a variant changing critical information even if it appears sharper at small size.

Acceptance criteria

Text

No critical character or number changes.

Fidelity

Elements requiring preservation remain identical.

Medium

Pixels and export suit the destination.

Traceability

Original, variant and settings are retained.

Frequently asked questions

Can an unreadable number be identified after upscaling?

Do not treat reconstruction as certain identification. Find a clearer source if the number matters.

Should the maximum upscale factor always be used?

No. Choose useful dimensions and compare artefacts; more pixels do not mean more reliable information.
