Make content useful and visible in AI search

Generated answers draw on pages that search engines can discover and understand. Useful, verifiable and technically accessible pages remain the basis for durable visibility in AI search.

Key points

The priority

Answer a specific question with original information, show the facts and sources in visible text, then confirm that the page is accessible, indexable and linked to the rest of the site. Measure search outcomes without promising an AI citation.

  • Clear, verifiable answer
  • Indexable page
  • Measurement and meaningful updates

A six-step review

  1. 1. Define the intent

Choose a real question and audience. Add value missing from generic pages: first-hand data, experience, a reproducible method or a traceable comparison.

  2. 2. Structure the answer

Use an explicit title, a direct opening answer, precise section headings and examples. Put key facts in visible HTML, not only in an image or script.

  3. 3. Show evidence

Link primary sources near claims, give relevant dates and separate observations, estimates and opinions. Correct outdated facts instead of merely changing the update date.

  4. 4. Check technical access

Review HTTP status, robots.txt, noindex directives, canonical URLs, internal links and mobile rendering. A blocked or empty page cannot be understood reliably.

  5. 5. Describe media and entities

Use relevant images with descriptive filenames and alternative text. Add structured data only when it matches visible content; never invent reviews, prices or authors.

  6. 6. Measure carefully

Track indexing, queries, clicks and cited pages where data is available. Compare consistent periods and improve pages that no longer serve their original intent.

Put the method to work

Practical case

Choose a question readers actually ask and compare the existing page with a version that provides a sourced answer and original example.

Evidence to keep

Check indexing, visible HTML, internal links, sources beside claims and the real page change; then monitor queries and clicks.

Make the decision

Keep the version that helps readers even if no assistant citation appears: no tag guarantees one.

Four quality criteria

Original usefulness

The page offers a fact, method or experience the reader can apply.

Traceability

Important claims have a source and dated context.

Technical clarity

Main content is visible, accessible and connected through HTML links.

Maintenance

Real changes are checked and dated honestly.

  • Gemini Notebook — Explore a set of reports, prepare a synthesis or find useful passages in a defined corpus. Select relevant documents and remove obsolete versions first.
  • AWS Bedrock — Evaluate models inside an AWS application, connect a corpus or organize calls with access controls. Define region, latency, budget and supervision requirements first.
  • Kagi — Conduct documentary searches with explicit source preferences. Evaluate coverage of your regular topics before relying on extensive personalization.
  • Perplexity Search — Explore a topic, locate documentation or compare arguments across publications. State scope, period and desired source types. Ask for disagreement instead of demanding a single conclusion.
  • Brave Search — Locate an official page, get an initial overview or compare a summary with listed documents. Short questions suit exploration; exact document names suit targeted retrieval.
  • Consensus — Explore a research question and identify studies to inspect. Specify population, intervention or phenomenon, comparison and measured outcome where applicable. Separate factual questions from personal recommendations.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a separate optimization for AI answers?

Google’s official guidance starts with search fundamentals: access, indexing, usefulness and verifiable content. No markup guarantees a citation.

Should I publish llms.txt?

It may serve as a voluntary summary in some contexts, but it does not replace HTML pages, a sitemap or official crawling controls.

Is a recent date enough?

No. Dates should reflect real changes; accuracy, sourcing and page value matter more than simply changing a timestamp.
